Three basic types of horror films

There are three different types of horror, Supernatural, Scientific, Naturalistic.

Supernatural - The supernatural is what we most often think of as a true Horror movie this usually includes supernatural monsters such as vampires, werewolves, demons, ghosts and zombies. These are creatures of legend and come from thousands of years of human psychic response to the mysteries of the earth.

Scientific - The scientific horror film is where we find the mad scientist(s) creating or discovering something outside of nature; something that will be lost from human control and run riot before being overpowered (usually) by the army, and the world is restored to peace and harmony. The monsters featured in this type of film are often new creations, things we've never imagined or seen elsewhere.

Naturalstic - The naturalistic horror films feature monsters which our daily news is often reporting. The monster can also be an animal, such as a bear or a reptile (usually grown to above-average size), or even a group of beasts (ants, bees, spiders, dogs).

key conventions

making the audience intrested by creating suspension.

something scary and gripping at end of trailer

use a close up of something scary lasting a second

use a scary voiceover

intence music track, starts slow and builds up

use natural scary images and props that people are scared of

use surprising clips in the trailer.

target audience

the target audience is the most important because these are the people that buy the product. for our film tailer our audience was 18-40 years of age, we choose this as our age limit because we thought these are the people that would enjoy our film. we made it a 18 because of the strong language and violence. we think they will enjoy the supernatural idea aswell.

planning filiming

Week 1 - The first week we was asked to choose what type of product we wanted to produce and we chose to do a film trailer as this would be fun acting the film trailer out and learning how to edit (cutting, sound, etc.). We chose to do a horror theme as this would be easier to act out and as Paranormal Activity had just came out at the time and gave us ideas.

Week 2 - The second week we researched other existing film trailers to get ideas from them, we researched 'Paranormal Activity' and 'Saw 6'.

Week 3 - On week 3 we planned what the trailer will be like: zombie, phycopath, experiment gone wrong, ghost, vampire, but we chose to do a demon, like paranormal activity. We planned most of the details of the horror. We planned how we will record the trailer, hand held or tripod, we chose to use the hand held. Using it hand held would be much easier to film and menuver as you do not have to set up a tripod every scene. The bad thing about using a hand held camera is that the film would be shakey and not steady.

Week 4 - Week 4 and we started doing the storyboard to our film trailer. We also named what the film trailer will be called, we decided on 'Possessed', as in our film someone will be possessed into a demon.

Week 5 - We started to choose the dates and times for the filming of the film trailer and seein what props or clothing we would need for the date and also we had to book the camera.

Week 6 - On week 6 we started our filming after school, this took us a couple of days to do as one person from our group had to leave early on the date we chose.

Week 7 - Week 7 we started to edit the film by choosing the parts that we were going to use for the trailer. After choosing the parts of film we needed we then put them in order.Week 8 - We then chose the music/sound we were to put into the film trailer and added it in the correct place. This took a long time as we had to experiment with diffrent sound.Week 9 - This is the last week as all we needed to do was put in some narrator writing and change a few things to make it what it is now.

ideas from other films

we have reviewed other horror film trailers, aswell as looking at different types and getting their codes and conventions. these films gave us a brief idea of what to put into our film. we looked at "Paranormal activity" and this gave us the idea for a hand held camera which we all agreed on. Next we looked at Saw vi (6), we realised that this trailer had a voice over which we thought we could use through out the our trailer, but we also wanted a music track opver our trailer and we realised the music would overpower the voice over. we decided on writing and split second framing for our trailer and to make our writing red because it gives more effect to our background music. we put the scariest bits in our trailer and the most adrenilined filled so people realise it will be a really scary film

possessed

This is our finished film called "Possessed" we called it Possessed as someone in our film becomes possessed

target audience for my production

the target audience for my production will be for 18 and above because of the blood and horror also the maturity level is to much for anyone below that age. there is also alot of gore so i would not recommend this for people with a bad reflex for blood. i would not recommend this to people who are highly religous because there is swearing a scenes that may disturb them.
